How to unlock GMC Terrain Acadia with a dead key fob using the emergency key by a locksmith
Did you know that if your key fob battery is dead you can still unlock your car?
In this post we will show you how to do exactly that as one of our automotive locksmiths had to do it for a customer, who wasn’t even aware he could unlock his car.
So as you probably know, if you use a key fob, you don’t need an actual key to unlock your car door.
The problem is, what happens in case your key fob battery dies? What do you do then?
The solution is simple. You can use the emergency key provided with the key fob. All you have to do is to take it out, insert it into the door cylinder and unlock the door manually with the key as you used to do back in the days. In this specific model (2021 GMC Terrain or Acadia) you will have to take the plastic cover off the door handle to expose the cylinder first, and then to insert to key.
This is of course just an example, but the way the emergency key works for all makes and models is basically the same.

In addition, we will also show you in the video, how our locksmith is cutting the emergency key provided with the new key fob.
It turns out that many people not only aren’t aware of the emergency key, but also don’t make sure that the key is cut. Of course, if the key hasn’t been cut you will not be able to use it to unlock the door in case the battery dies.
Therefore, the first thing you should do is making sure your key is cut. Its easy, just press the small button and push it out. If you see it cut in a certain shape, try it out and unlock the door. If not, you may want to contact the dealer or locksmith to cut it for you.
As you can see in the video, cutting the key with a special cutting machine is pretty sophisticated. The locksmith is using a computer to tell the machine how deep to cut the key. This is done by obtaining your key code first.
A locksmith or dealer can help you do that.
Finally, remember that this is also relevant when you get an additional key fob. You will have to make sure the emergency key is cut as well.
