GM Remote Key Fob HYQ2AB

Remote key fob overview information

The HYQ2AB is a remote key fob, also known as a smart key, proxy, intelligent key, or “push to start.” It is mostly used for GM models made AFTER 2013, but may be used for different models and years.

Also, the HYQ2AB signals the car (via radio frequency) that the key is nearby, so the owner only has to push the start button to start the engine. Alternatively, you can use the key to start your car or open the doors if the remote’s battery is dead.

As this key contains a transponder chip, programming/coding is required to start your car.

The chip is located inside the remote and cannot be seen unless you disassemble the fob. Disassembly is not recommended.

HYQ2AB has a few additional names, depending on the manufacturer – OE: 13594023, 13594024, 13580811, 13580812, 13580800; FCC: HYQ2AB. However, HYQ2AB is the most common.

Where can I get a new car key made?

Options to get a replacement key fob

Generally speaking, you have three options:

First, call an automotive locksmith. This is usually the best choice because this type of key has to be programmed or it won’t be compatible with the car’s computer. As the car must be present for programming, the locksmith you select must offer a mobile service or you’ll have to tow the car to the dealer or locksmith.

Second, order the key online. But if you choose this option, once your key arrives, you’ll need to have a locksmith cut and program it for you.

Dealer – the dealer should be able to make you a replacement key but you’ll need to tow the car to their premises as this type of key needs to be programmed/coded.

Is programming or coding needed for this type of key? Does this key have a chip in it? Should it be coded to the car?

Coding is needed

Yes. This type of key is a remote chip key and will need to be programmed. In addition, special coding/programming equipment is needed and so you’ll need to either call a locksmith or tow the car to the dealer.

I already have a working key fob. Can I get a duplicate made at the hardware store/ locksmith shop/ dealership? Will it start the car?

Coding machine connected to the car OBD

Hardware store:

No. This type of key is an electronic remote entry fob and you’ll need to have it programmed/coded to start the car. This requires a special device that hardware stores don’t carry.

In addition, the car must be present to connect the coding machine into the car’s OBD.

Locksmith shop or dealer:

Yes. You have two options:

A. Programming an additional key WHEN THE CAR IS PRESENT – You can drive the car to a locksmith or to a dealer, and they will program an additional key for the car.

B. Cloning a new key: The cloning process is basically making a duplicate WITHOUT THE NEED TO HAVE THE CAR ON SITE. To make a duplicate of a transponder key/remote, the locksmith needs to have a special device. However, you will need to have a working key that can start the car.

A word of caution:

Double-check with the dealer or locksmith first. Make sure they have the necessary equipment to clone the key.

If you do have a working key and simply need a duplicate, the dealer would be your best and cheapest option (First, call to verify that your car key can be cloned).

What information do I need to give to the locksmith or dealer when I call for the service?

Information to provide a locksmith

First, know the exact year, make, and model of your car, e.g., 2018 Cadillac ATS.

In addition, write down the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of the car, which you can find on the left side of the dashboard near the side mirror.

The VIN helps the locksmith or dealer to verify the year, make, and model of the car. It’s important to ask if you can come and pick up the key or if the car must be present.

Of course, you can have the car towed to the locksmith or dealer, but that adds to the expense.

Finally, make sure you can show ownership of the car by having the necessary documents such as the car’s title and your ID and insurance card.
