Where can I get a new car key made?

Generally speaking, you have three options:

  1. First, call a locksmith  – Most chances that would be your best choice as most dealers do not keep codes for older models on file.
  2. Order the key online – You can order a key blank online and then call a locksmith to cut it for you. However, please keep in mind that it will not save you a lot of money as this is a pretty cheap key and the locksmith probably has this key available.
  3. Dealer – Most dealers do not keep key codes for older models(more than 10 years) on file. However, it worth a try.

Can I order the key online and will it need to be programmed to start the car?

This type of key is a non transponder key and therefore no programming is needed. In addition, if you have the key code (sometimes you can get it from a Honda dealer) you can bring it to a local locksmith and they would be able to cut you the key on site.

How much does it usually cost?

Dealer:

In case the dealer has the code of file – no more than $30.

Automotive locksmith:

On site mobile service – Usually $40 for the service call plus about $50 for labor and key.

Locksmith shop (In case the locksmith has the key code on file) : About $50

Key only online:

(Uncut) : Less than $1

Can I get a duplicate made at the hardware store or locksmith shop and will it start the car?

Yes. This type of key is a non transponder key and therefore you can make copies at any hardware or locksmith shop.

Moreover, we recommend making extra copies and having the key code at a safe place just in case you lose you car keys in the future.

Is programming needed for this type key?

No. This type of key is a non transponder chip key and therefore no programming is needed.

What should I tell the locksmith or dealer when I call for service?

First, make sure you have the exact year, make and model. e.g. 1992 Honda Accord.

In addition, write down the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of the car located at the left side of the dashboard near the mirror. That would help the locksmith or dealer verifying the year, make and model of the car.

Moreover, ask if you can come and pick up the key or the car has to be present. When key codes are not available as it happens with older models, an on site service will be required to make a new key.

Alternatively, you can tow the car to the locksmith shop but that would be more expansive.

Finally, make sure you can show ownership of the car by having the necessary documents. Title, ID, insurance card etc.
