Also, the TQ8-FOB-4F29 signals the car (via radio frequency) that the key is nearby, so the owner only has to push the start button to start the engine. Alternatively, you can use the key to start your car or open the doors if the remote’s battery is dead.

As this key contains a transponder chip, programming/coding is required to start your car.

Where can I get a new key made?

How to get a replacement key fob - Options
How to get a replacement key fob – Options

Generally speaking, you have three options:

  1. First, call an automotive locksmith. This is usually the best choice because this type of key has to be programmed or it won’t be compatible with the car’s computer. As the car must be present for programming, the locksmith you select must offer a mobile service or you’ll have to tow the car to the dealer or locksmith.
  2. Order the key online. But if you choose this option, once your key arrives, you’ll need to have a locksmith cut and program it for you.
  3. Dealer – the dealer should be able to make you a replacement key but you’ll need to tow the car to their premises as this type of key needs to be programmed/coded.

How much does it usually cost to get a new remote key fob?

We’ve researched the average price for this key with dealers, automotive locksmiths, and online. Needless to say, the price varies greatly and depends on where you get the key fob, the time of day these services are rendered, and the service location (mobile locksmith service or dealer).

The prices mentioned below are only rough estimates.

For more general information and great tips on how to save money, please visit our blog post: car key replacement cost

Dealer:

The dealer should have the code needed for your fob on file. An additional code or pin may be required to program this key. The dealer should have that also. Expect to pay about $230 (key fob, including coding).

Please remember that this price DOES NOT include the cost of towing the car to the dealer. Using a towing service will increase the cost considerably.

I already have a working remote. Can I get a duplicate made at the hardware store/locksmith shop/dealership? Will it start the car?

Hardware Store:

No. This type of key is an electronic remote entry fob and you’ll need to have it programmed/coded to start the car. This requires a special device that hardware stores don’t carry.

Locksmith Shop or Dealer:
Copy a key fob at the dealer or locksmith
Copy a key fob at the dealer or locksmith

Yes. You have two options:

  1. Programming an additional key WHEN THE CAR IS PRESENT – You can drive the car to a locksmith or to a dealer, and they will program an additional key for the car.
  2. Cloning a new key: The cloning process is basically making a duplicate WITHOUT THE NEED TO HAVE THE CAR ON SITE. To make a duplicate of a transponder key/remote, the locksmith needs to have a special device. However, you will need to have a working key that can start the car.

A word of caution:

Double-check with the dealer or locksmith first. Make sure they have the necessary equipment to clone the key.

If you do have a working key and simply need a duplicate, the dealer would be your best and cheapest option (First, call to verify that your car key can be cloned).

What information do I need to give to the locksmith or dealer when I call for the service?

Relevant information to provide the locksmith or dealer
Relevant information to provide the locksmith or dealer

First, know the exact year, make, and model of your car, e.g., 2022 Hyundai Palisade.

Also, write down the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of the car, which you can find on the left side of the dashboard near the side mirror. The VIN helps the locksmith or dealer to verify the year, make, and model of the car.

It’s important to ask if you can come and pick up the key or if the car must be present.

Of course, you can have the car towed to the locksmith or dealer, but that adds to the expense.

Finally, make sure you can show ownership of the car by having the necessary documents such as the car’s title and your ID and insurance card.
