Introduction:

This type of key is a remote key, mostly used for Subaru models made AFTER 2012. In addition, this type of key is a “push to start key” or fob key, meaning the remote signal the car that the key is nearby so the owner only has to push the start button to start the engine. Alternatively, you can use the transponder key to start your car or open the doors in case the remote’s battery is dead.

Type of key: Remote Transponder Chip key / Push to start key / Fob key

Key blank(for online purchase): OEM# 88835AJ00A

Where can I get a new car key made?

Generally speaking, you have three options:

  1. First, call an automotive locksmith  – Most chances that would be your best choice as this type of remote key needs to be programmed to car’s computer. Hence, the car has to be present. Therefore, you can either call a locksmith who offers a mobile service or tow the car to the dealer.
  2. Order the key online – You can order a remote key blank online and then call a locksmith to program it for you.
  3. Dealer – The dealer should be able to make you a replacement key. However, you will have to tow the car there as this type of remote key needs to be programmed.

Can I order the key online and will it need to be programmed to start the car?

This type of key is a remote transponder chip key and therefore programming is needed. In addition, special equipment is needed so you will either have to call a locksmith or tow the car to the dealer.

How much does it usually cost?

We called dealers and locksmiths companies in three different cities and below is the average price for a replacement key(when available)

Dealer:

Usually about $300. Please keep in mind that this price DOES NOT include the price of towing the car to the dealer, which will result in a higher cost.

Automotive locksmith:

On-site mobile service – Usually $400 for parts and labor, including programming.

Remote key only online:

(Uncut or programmed) : About $150

Can I get a duplicate made at the hardware store or locksmith shop and will it start the car?

Hardware store:

No. This type of key is a remote transponder key and therefore you will need to have the remote key programmed to start the car, which requires special machine that hardware stores don’t usually carry.

Locksmith shop or dealer:

Yes. You have two options:

  1. Programming an additional key WHEN THE CAR IS PRESENT – You can drive the car to a locksmith or the dealer and they will program an additional key to the car.
  2. Cloning a new key – This type of process called cloning is basically making a duplicate WITHOUT THE NEED OF THE HAVING CAR ON SITE. In order to make a duplicate of a transponder key / remote, the locksmith should have a special machine. Moreover, a working key that can start the car must be available.

In this case, when you do have a working key and just need a duplicate, the dealer would be your best and cheapest option.

Is programming needed for this type key?

Yes. This type of remote key is a transponder chip key and therefore programming is needed.

What should I tell the locksmith or dealer when I call for service?

First, make sure you have the exact year, make and model. e.g. 2013 Subaru Outback w/Prox.

In addition, write down the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of the car located at the left side of the dashboard near the mirror. That would help the locksmith or dealer verifying the year, make and model of the car.

Finally, make sure you can show ownership of the car by having the necessary documents. The title, ID, insurance card etc.
