Let’s go over each one of these steps.

First step – Choose the right keyless entry remote.

Choosing the right remote for your model is the most important thing. Some remotes look alike but have different frequencies they work on. Therefore, choosing the right is crucial.

The first thing you should do is verifying the year your car was made. The best way to do that is by the VIN number.

Second, now that we know the year and model, we can choose the right keyless remote.

Simply go to your Toyota model HERE and check the keyless entry remote for the relevant year.

Now that you know which remote you should use, let’s move on to the next step – buying the remote.

(Method A)

First,

Remember that you may need at least one entry remote working and functioning to program an additional one. In case you have none, you will have to call an automotive locksmith or the dealer.

However, sometimes you may be able to program even the first remote yourself, even if you don’t have a working one. It depends on the type of model you have.

Make sure all doors are closed except the driver side door, which should remain open AND unlocked. Key should be out of the ignition.

Second,

Insert the key into the ignition and pull out. Do not attempt to start the car or turn the key. Simply in and out.

Third,

Complete the following steps within 40 seconds:

Using the power door lock on the driver side door, click “lock” and then “unlock” 5 times, starting with “lock”. Try to do it at an even pace of one cycle per second.

Once you finished doing that the 5th time, close and open again the driver side door.

Fourth,

Complete the following steps within 40 seconds:

Using the power door lock on the driver side door, click “lock” and then “unlock” 5 times, starting with “lock”. Try to do it at an even pace of one cycle per second.

Once done, insert the key into the ignition and turn to “ON” position then back to “Off” then back to “ON” then back to “Off”.

Now, remove the key from the ignition.

Fifth,

In case you did it right, within three seconds, a chime will sound, indicating the car is in programming mode. In case nothing happens, start all over again.

Sixth,

Complete the following steps within 40 seconds:

Press both “Lock” and “Unlock” buttons on the remote for 1 second. Immediately after letting go of the buttons, press the “Lock” button alone and hold for 2 seconds.

In case you did it right, within three seconds, a chime will sound, indicating the remote was successfully programmed.

You can repeat this step for an additional remote you would like to program.

(Method B)

First,

Make sure all doors are closed. Then press the Lock button on the driver side door.

Second,

Insert the key into the ignition and turn to “ON” and then to “OFF” 7 times ending in “Off” position.

Leave the key in the ignition when done.

Third,

On your new remote, press and hold the “lock” button until the driver side door unlocks.

In some models, you may need to hold the “unlock” button. Try both methods.

Fourth,

Lock all the doors again simply by pressing the “lock” button on the driver side door.

Your new remote should be programmed now.

Repeat these steps for any additional remote you want to program.
