This type of key is a remote key, mostly used for Toyota models made AFTER 2006. In addition, this type of key is a “push to start key” or fob key, meaning the remote signal the car that the key is nearby so the owner only has to push the start button to start the engine. Yes. You have two options:
- Programming an additional key WHEN THE CAR IS PRESENT – You can drive the car to a locksmith or the dealer and they will program an additional key to the car.
- Cloning a new key – This type of process called cloning is basically making a duplicate WITHOUT THE NEED OF THE HAVING CAR ON SITE. In order to make a duplicate of a transponder key / remote, the locksmith should have a special machine. Moreover, a working key that can start the car must be available.
In this case, when you do have a working key and just need a duplicate, the dealer would be your best and cheapest option.

What should I tell the locksmith or dealer when I call for service?
