  2. Order the key online – You can order a remote key blank online and then call a locksmith to program it for you.

Usually about $350. Please keep in mind that this price DOES NOT include the price of towing the car to the dealer, which will result in a higher cost.

Can I get a duplicate made at the hardware store or locksmith shop and will it start the car?

Hardware store:

No. This type of key is a remote transponder key and therefore you will need to have the remote key programmed to start the car, which requires special machine that hardware stores don’t usually carry.

Locksmith shop or dealer:

Yes. You have two options:

  1. Programming an additional key WHEN THE CAR IS PRESENT – You can drive the car to a locksmith or the dealer and they will program an additional key to the car.
  2. Cloning a new key – This type of process called cloning is basically making a duplicate WITHOUT THE NEED OF THE HAVING CAR ON SITE. In order to make a duplicate of a transponder key / remote, the locksmith should have a special machine. Moreover, a working key that can start the car must be available.

In this case, when you do have a working key and just need a duplicate, the dealer would be your best and cheapest option.

Is programming needed for this type key?

Yes. This type of remote key is a transponder chip key and therefore programming is needed.

What should I tell the locksmith or dealer when I call for service?

First, make sure you have the exact year, make and model. e.g. 2007 Toyota Yaris.

In addition, write down the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of the car located at the left side of the dashboard near the mirror. That would help the locksmith or dealer verifying the year, make and model of the car.

Finally, make sure you can show ownership of the car by having the necessary documents. The title, ID, insurance card etc.
